Susita Hippos on the Mountain just up from Kibbutz Ein Gev

Sussita Hippos National Park is on a hill on the slopes of what is the beginning of the Golan Heights just east of the Sea of Galilee and up the mountain from Kibbutz Ein Gev,

There is a long history of settlement in this place and so it's almost impossible to describe in just a few short sentences. Pagans Jews Christians and Muslims all controlled the city at one time or another.

The ancient city, whose name suggests a connection to horses, developed in the Hellenistic period beginning perhaps in the 300s BCE.

It was destroyed by a major earthquake in 749 CE. After that, the site was permanently abandoned and never resettled.
