Temple Beth Shalom of the West Valley, 12202 N. 101st Ave., is presenting two interfaith adult education series in February.

“The Prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah: Two Sophisticated and Innovative Thinkers” will be offered 10-11 a.m. Thursdays, Feb.  8, 15, 22 and 29.

Led by Rabbi Dana Evan Kaplan, the course is designed for all people of faith who are interested in studying the Book of Prophets. In ancient Judea 2,500 years ago, Jeremiah and Isaiah advised kings and priests on how to understand justice and ethics.

“We will be telling the story of not only Isaiah and Jeremiah but their entire generations and how they dealt with a very dangerous world and very threatening neighbors. Both  were sophisticated and innovative thinkers who took ideas emanating from the imperial centers of their time and fused them with their own traditions, creating a new ethical approach to Judaism,” Kaplan explained.

Cost is $20 for members and $35 for non-members. Registration deadline is noon, Feb. 6.

“Alef-Bet: Beginning Hebrew for Adults” will be presented by Temple Beth Shalom member Mariane Anderson 10-11 a.m. Mondays, Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26.

Learn how to read letters and vowels in Hebrew, and how sounds are put together into words. This is a basic course for those who would like to read prayer books in Hebrew. It will require some practice at home and perseverance after the course ends.

Anderson, who is a Temple Beth Shalom religious school teacher, was motivated to learn siddur Hebrew herself so she could teach beginning Hebrew to her daughter and other fourth graders so they would be prepared to become B’nai Mitzvah.

Cost is $25 for members and $35 for non-members. Registration deadline is noon, Feb. 1.

Call the Temple office to register and pay for the course, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays.
