Rabbi Dana Evan Kaplan will present a Jewish humor series in April at Temple Beth Shalom of the West Valley, 12202 N. 101st Ave., in Sun City. The four-week course will be from 10-11 a.m. April 3, 10, 17 and 24.
In stand-up, film, and television, a disproportionately high percentage of comedians have been Jewish. Time estimated in 1978 that 80 percent of professional American comics were Jewish. Sigmund Freud wrote of Jewish jokes, “I do not know whether there are many other instances of people making fun to such a degree of its own character.”
This class will examine comedy woven around more than 100 of the best Jewish jokes about family life, intellectualism, anti-Semitism, and God and Judaism. So come to laugh and learn with us!
The textbook, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin’s Jewish Humor: What the Best Jewish Jokes Say About the Jews, will be featured, but is optional. This course is open to members, $18; and non-members, $36. Registration is required.
To register, contact the TBS office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday at 623. 977.3240 or email at templebethshalomaz@gmail.com.
